Golf Injuries

Golfers are at high risk for low back pain due to the twisting and pulling that takes place during the golf swing against a spine that is not moving through its full range of motion. During the golf swing the spine is exposed to extra load and tensile movement. It is estimated that during a golf swing the soft tissue of the lumbar spine is exposed to a force eight times a golfers body weight. Add to this the game's requirement for prolonged standing, twisting and bending, and the stress accumulation on the supporting structures of the lumbar spine during play of the game become significant. When this force dissipates through the vertebral body, muscle, discs and ligaments can be damaged and cause minor to severe low back pain.

Research indicates that 35% of amateur and 24% of professional golfers have some form of low back pain. If you are a golfer suffering chronic or periodic low back pain and wish to prevent further injury from playing golf always make certain you go through a warm up and stretching routine prior to playing. A good warm up and stretching routine will increase circulation and range of motion, and prepare you physically for loads and stresses. Strengthening the abdominal and lower back muscles will help stabilize the spine during the golf swing and in turn produce more powerful and longer shots.

If you sustain injury while playing golf discontinue the activity immediately and seek chiropractic care. A doctor of chiropractic can assess your situation, help you find physical comfort and suggestion a regimen of treatment that will have you back on the golf course as soon as possible.
